Soil Nails
Typically soil nailing is used when dealing with soil slopes, or retaing walls and can be used when trying to stabilize excavated slopes. Soil nailing is a a method used to stablize exisiting soil by installing threaded steel bars at an angle. The bars are usually installed at a slight downward angle into a pre-drilled hole and then grouted into place or drilled and grouted at the same time. On the surface shotcrete may or may not be applied depending on what is required. Many times soil nails are used as an economical means of creating retaining walls or shoring systems. This is because it creates a reinforced section that is stable and able to retain the ground behind it. The process reinforces and strengthens the existing ground soil layer.
